BANGKOK – Biologists have discovered what they believe to be is the tiniest animal on the planet that has a spine, in Papua New Guinea.
Christopher Austin from Louisiana State University wrote about the discovery in the magazine PLoS ONE, describing the animal as a tiny frog barely 8 millimeters long.
The mini frog, aka paedophryne amauensis, named after the town Amau, Papua New Guinea, where it was found, is dark brown in color, has barely visible toes and large eyes and is only one-third the size of a dime.
The tiny critter lives in the leaves litter on the floors of tropical forests and is especially active early mornings and in the evenings and makes a distinct shrill sound.
The specie is so small that after just a few cries, the animal is forced to rest for one to three minutes to regain strength. Because of its ultra tiny size, the little frog is susceptible to constant dehydration.
That’s most likely the reason why the frog hides out under wet leaves on tropical forest floors.
Biologists call the find extremely important saying ‘they know very little about animals with extreme body sizes, be is small or large’, according to Austin.
In December a tiny frog specie was discovered in Papua New Guinea that biologist thought was the smallest vertebre animal on the planet at barely 8.5 millimeters long.
The newly discovered frog is however one to two millimeters shorter, making it the world’s smallest vertebrate.
