NEW YORK – The Journal of American Medical Association writes that unlike cigarette smoke, occasional Marihuana use has no negative affect on lung and breathing capacity.

From 1985 to 2006, 5115 men and women were routinely checked for negative affects that smoking Marihuana may have on lung volume and ease of breathing.

The researchers found no diminished lung capacity or impaired breathing by individuals who smoked the herb occasionally, which is contrary to cigarette smokers who experience less lung capacity and have more breathing difficulties the longer they smoke.

Professor Stefan Kertez from the University of Alabama/Birmingham says that “occasionally smoking Marihuana results in an increase in lung volume and better lung capacity”.

A healthy adult can blow out 3 to 4 liters of air per second. With occasional use of Marihuana, that capacity increases by 50 milliliter.

“The improvement isn’t very high but is significant,” writes Kertez.

“What’s more, those smoking Marihuana occasionally or even consistently like for example 1 joint a day for seven years, had no decrease in breathing or lung volume.”

The professor warns however that these statistics are no guidelines to better health.
