LIMA – The trial against Joran van der Sloot for murdering Lima native Stephanie Flores resumed on Wednesday after being temporarily halted last week after the Dutchman said he didn’t agree with the prosecutor’s allegations against him.
Yet now in a totally unexpected move, van der Sloot who at times was defiant about the alleged crime he committed, opens up in court and confesses to having murdered the Peruvian student in his hotel room on May 30th 2010.
Van der Sloot’s confession to murder will speed up the trial tremendously and he will be told on Friday what his sentence will be.
Prior to making this confession, van der Sloot has constantly resented governments in Peru, Chili and even America saying they violated his rights as a free person. During one statement last year, after Joran was caught trying to cross into Chili he even went as far as saying the Chilean officials are ‘crooks who don’t follow any rules’.
During the trial, a crowd had gathered outside the courthouse, holding up banners with the words “murderer” or “life imprisonment” written on them.
Just last week the prosecutors had asked that van der Sloot would receive a 30 year sentence. But by confessing to the murder, legal experts familiar with Peruvian law say he may actually only receive 12 years and with good behavior he could be out in just 8 to 10 years.
However, Peru wants to extradite Joran to America to stand trial on corruption charges based on allegedly scamming the Holloway family out of $25,000 in exchange for information detailing the whereabouts of their daughter Natalee, who has now been missing for five years.
In addition to the Peruvian jail sentence, the Dutchman could receive 20 years behind bars in the United States if he’s found guilty of embezzlement.
Joran van der Sloot is still considered a suspect in the disappearance of the American student in Aruba which she visited with her high school friends to celebrate their graduation.
Flores’ lawyer, Edward Alvarez, calls van der Sloot a psychopath and says he should never be allowed to return to society.
Alvarez did not comment when asked if he will appeal the court’s decision of granting van der Sloot a punishment less than life imprisonment or less than 30 years. He did say however that a 20 year sentence wouldn’t be enough.
The trial will continue on Friday at which time 3 Peruvian judges will decide the Dutchman’s fate.
But despite facing a possible 30 years behind bars in Peru for confessing to murder, van der Sloot has one more ace up his sleeve.
If his lawyer José Jimenez, can prove that his client’s rights were indeed violated when he was deported from Chili to Peru, the Peruvian court is bound to adhere to those rights, which means they will have to start the trial all over again from scratch.
