SYDNEY – Engineers demand the world’s largest airplane stays on the ground because of a potential hazard that could kill hundreds of passengers.

Small hairline cracks that run through the wings of the A380 Airbus could spell disaster according to engineers.

The fractures were discovered in two A380 planes belonging to Singapore Airlines and in one more A380 belonging to Qantas.

Both airline companies states however that the hairline cracks do not pose a safety hazard.

But maintenance technicians have a different view and advice the companies to not fly the A380 planes for the time being.

Steve Purvinas, secretary of the Australian Association of Airline Engineers says:

“We can’t continue to play with passengers’ lives and expect that planes will simply continue to fly for the next four years when the next inspection will be.”

The airlines as well as Airbus, the maker of the A380 plane, admit to the existence of the hairline cracks yet tell passengers there is nothing to worry about.

A spokesperson for Airbus said:

“We acknowledge the tiny cracks in the wings of some of the planes. We’ve discovered the cause of the cracks and have ordered repairs that can be completely during routine maintenance.”

This isn’t the first time an A380 airbus is plagued with mechanical problems.

On November 4 2011, an A380 plane belonging to Qantas, was forced to make an emergency landing when one of its engines exploded shortly after take of in Singapore.

That incident forced Qantas to keep six similar planes grounded for a certain time.

To date there are 67 jumbo planes flying around the world. In addition to Singapore Airlines and Qantas, the other five A380 Airbus owners are The Emirates, Air France, Lufthansa, China Southern and Korean Airlines.
