VIENNA – While most of Western Europe is experiencing a mild winter with very little or no snow, Austria on the other hand is nearly drowning in an excess of the white fluff.
Austria’s ski resorts that were still green just weeks ago, are now covered in thick blankets of fresh white snow making them virtually inaccessible to the rest of the world.
Especially the state of Tirol, a favorite winter area for avid skiers, is inundated with severe snow fall of up to 4 feet in some places.
Roads are closed off and snow blowers have a hard time keeping up clearing the highways, making it nearly impossible for anyone to get in and out of the resorts.
The popular ski areas of Ischgl and Galtür in the Austrian Alps are completely snowed in with no access to the outside world.
The Austrian Tourist agency warns ‘daredevils’ to stay away from the snowed in regions, because of the real danger for avalanches.

Parts of Germany were also hit hard with excessive snow on Saturday, especially around the Black Forest, where some towns received as much as 5 feet of pearl white snow.
For most of Western Europe however, this winter temperatures are relatively mild and rain is the norm of the day; a stark contrast to the 2010 winter when many towns and cities accross Europe were covered in several feet of thick snow that lingered relentlessly for a solid month.
