LIMA – 18 months after allegedly murdering Stephanie Flores, the Joran van der Sloot trial in Lima, Peru, has finally begun.
In preparation for the trial, van der Sloot is being moved to the Challapalca prison, considered to be Peru’s worst prison and often referred to as “Peru’s Siberia”.
For the Dutchman, the stay at his “new home” won’t be pleasant. The prison is located in an inhospitable and barely reachable area near the Bolivian border.
Conditions at the prison are notoriously “bad” and many human rights activist groups have tried in vain to improve living conditions for prisoners at Challapalca.
The prison is located next to a military base at an altitude exceeding 13,000 feet, resulting in freezing temperatures; hence the prison’s nickname “Peru’s Siberia”.
In addition to having to look forward to spending his time in a jail that will most likely make his life a living hell, Joran van der Sloot was also informed by Peruvian authorities that the American government made an official request last month to have him extradited to the United States.
The U.S. wants to trial van der Sloot on its own turf for swindling Natalee Holloway’s family out of money.
The United States is in negotiation with Peru to send Joran to the U.S. immediately after his trial in Lima has ended.
The United States government promises Peru that immediately after the U.S. trial has ended Joran van der Sloot will be send back to Peru to serve his sentence for the murder of Stephanie Flores.
If the U.S. is granted its request, van der Sloot will have to serve additional time in a United States’ jail after he has completed his jail time in Peru.
For Joran van der Sloot, who is still considered a suspect in the disappearance of American student Natalee Holloway in Aruba, it seems that his nightmares are just beginning.
