MALE – Maldives authorities deny the claim by Islamic parties that their luxury hotels located in tantalizing surroundings, are nothing more than a melting pot for prostitution.

The government ordered all wellness centers in all the luxury hotels on its chain of 26 islands to close down after an Islamic party protested against the existence of those centers calling them ‘tourists sex spots’.

Maldives authorities adamantly deny this accusation and stated that it will most certainly reconsider its decision to keep the centers closed.

“Our hotels don’t cater to sex tourism,” said Sim Ibrahim of the Department of Tourism, located in the Maldives’ capital Malé.

“Closing the centers is worrisome. It doesn’t help our tourism and it doesn’t give our country a good image.”

Mariyam Zulfa, Minister of the Department of Tourism, said that the closure of the centers is by now means definite and that the government is ‘thinking’ about their decision.

Zulfa says that she is well aware of the consequences that closing the wellness centers may have on Maldives’ tourism.

The Islamic party Adhaalath protested against the wellness centers because it says that the saunas are being used by prostitutes.

For the Maldives, tourism makes up a large portion of its revenue and accounts for many jobs. In 2011 850,000 people traveled to the Maldives staying in their luxury hotels and using their services.

Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed has asked for a much more tolerable Islam in his country of 330,000 citizens, who by law are all Muslims.

He asked his countrymen to embrace the more traditional and liberal Islam instead of the extreme, rigid version of their religion.
