LONDON – Pro tennis player and ranked fourth in the world, Andy Murray, has made a deal with tennis legend Ivan Lendl to become his personal coach.
The 24 year old Scottish hopeful announced on his website that he is engaging the services of eight time Grand Slam winner Lendl to help him win his first Grand Slam title.
“I am looking forward working with Ivan. Few have his knowledge and expertise. He means a lot to the tennis world.”
Ivan Lendl, considered by many as one of the world’s greatest tennis players of all time, responded in kind saying “I am looking forward working with Murray”.
In his hay day, Lendl held the number one ranking in the world for an unprecedented 270 consecutive weeks and reached Grand Slam finals for 11 straight years.
“Andy has unique talent and I will certainly try to help him reach his goal,” the tennis legend said.
In his relatively short tennis career Andy Murray has been three times in a Grand Slam finals but never managed to take home the title and the trophy. He lost the US Open finals in 2008 and twice the Australian Open in 2010 and 2011.
Ivan Lendl, who played 19 Grand Slam events during his career and won 8 of them, is only toppled by the Swiss legend Roger Federer who has played 23 Grand Slams thus far.
Murray should indeed be in good hands with Lendl as his coach and his chances for finally winning a Grand Slam should certainly be favorable, considering Lendl’s Grand Slam track record.
Ivan Lendl won the Australian Open in 1989 and 1990, Roland-Garros in 1984, 1986 and 1987 and the US Open in 1985, 1986 and 1987.
Although he never won Wimbledon he was twice a runner-up.
