ABUJA – At least 36 people were killed during a bombing attack in Abuja, Nigeria, while attending a Christmas morning mass. Two additional churches were bombed as well.
The office of State Security was also attacked. Three police officers and a Kamikaze, who was killed by state security, were killed in this bombing incident.
Nigeria has been in unrest for the past several days. In all the nation experienced five bombing attacks, each one took place on Christmas day.
Of the 36 people that were killed, at least 20 of them were gathered in a church in Madalla, a suburb of Abuja. A priest told local news he suspects at least 27 people were killed when his church was bombed.
According to an eyewitness it is a miracle not more people were killed saying the church was packed on this special day and not enough ambulances were available to transport the victims.
In a church in the suburb of Jos, an officer was killed while walking the beat.
Reportedly, the bombings are the responsibility of an Islamic group known as Boko Haram. Nigeria as a nation is divided into two distinct religions: Islam in the North and Christianity in the South.
The group already claimed the bombing at the Madalla church. Authorities fear that the group was assisted with the construction of the bombs by an outside source that may be connected to al-Qaeda.
Yet another church was bombed in the city of Gadaka, in the northern state of Yobe. Eyewitnesses said there were many casualties.
The Vatican called the Christmas bombings ‘absurd actions fueled by intense hate’.
Last year a similar bombing took place on Christmas day in the region of Jos. Then too a church was chosen as one of the bombing targets. 30 people lost their lives during this violent attack.
