Perseids meteor showers, known by Catholics as the “tears of St. Lawrence” have been observed some 2000 years ago with the very first information about them coming from the far East.
These meteor showers are called Perseids because they originate from a point located in the constellation of Perseus. The shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the peak in activity being between August 9 and 14, depending on the particular location of the Perseid cloud; a stream of debris that stretches along the orbit of the Swift-Tuttle comet.
At high peak, the meteors can travel at speeds of 60 miles per hour or more and can be seen all over the sky. Because of the path the Swift-Tuttle takes, the meteors are most visible in the Northern Hemisphere.
The best time to watch Perseids meteor showers is during pre-dawn hours. In 2010, the peak of the showers are Thursday and Friday August 13th and 14th.

Perseids showers are best spotted in open skies away from city lights and air pollution
Tom McDonough, president of the Astronomy Club of Tulsa, says that for best viewing of the Perseids, you should get away from the city lights and look to the northeast sky.
He says that the prime time to see the streaks of light will be the very early morning hours on Friday. He expects to see several meteors an hour.
McDonough points out that telescopes and binoculars will not help to look at the meteors in the night sky. “A meteor shower is best seen by the naked eye.” he says.
