MIAMI – NASA announced on Monday that their space probe ‘Kepler’ has discovered a planet that resembles much our own earth and could possibly sustain life.
The new planet baptized the “Kepler-22-b” is 600 light years from earth, is about 2.4 times the size of earth, takes 290 days to turn around its star and has an average temperature of about 72 degrees Fahrenheit.
According to BBC, astronomers don’t know as of yet if the planet is made up of mostly of stone, liquid or gas, nor do they know if life exists on the planet. The scientists do know however that the planet meets the requirements to sustain life as we know it.
The probe Kepler, which was launched March 2009 and was built to discover planets in the milky way that resemble earth, made the discovery. Thus far Kepler has discovered 2,326 such candidate planets, of which some 207 are about the same size as earth.
