LONDON – British scientists have developed new breast examination technology than can discover breast cancer in 8 seconds.

The technology named ‘Maria’ is based on anti-landmine technology and is according to the scientists who developed it much safer than the Mammogram system used today.

Maria operates using radio waves instead of X-rays, the common scanning technology used in current Mammogram tests, making it faster, safer and very reliable, according to one scientist.

Reportedly Maria (Multistatic Array Processing for Radiowave Image Acquisition) is also much cheaper to produce and can be used to check women of any age.

The Maria system, developed by Micrima, is pain-free and does not require a woman’s breast to be pressed between metal plates but uses cups that are placed over the breasts, much like a bra, and that transmit data to a computer.

Data sent to the computer are instantly transformed in 3D pictures. The entire process takes all about just 8 seconds start to finish, compared to the conventional X-Ray method where an X-Ray technician needs one minute to setup the equipment, women often must take 2 images and wait about 2 weeks for results.

The new technology also makes it possible to detect breast cancer in younger women, whose breasts have denser breast tissue, making it more difficult for the conventional X-Ray method to detect cancer.

Scientists are hopeful the new technology will be widespread in five years.
