LOS ANGELES – Dr. Conrad Murray was sentenced to serve 4 years behind bars for the involuntary manslaughter of pop singer Michael Jackson.
Immediately after he was sentenced to doctor was escorted to the Los Angeles County jail.
Michael’s mom, Katherine, called the verdict just.
Really?
Serving time at a county jail versus a state prison is like a walk in the park. A county jail is much more lackadaisical and Murray, now considered a celebrity, will more than likely not mingle with jail mates.
Sheriff Lee Baca will see to it that no physical harm comes to Murray during his watch.
The county and state prisons in California are overcrowded and there is a solid chance that the doc won’t serve but a fraction of his sentence.(A deja vue of what happened to Lindsay Lohan just weeks ago?)
Additionally, Dr. Conrad Murray has been given 60 days to appeal the court’s decision. Why pronounce a sentence when the convict can appeal it and ask for a reduced sentence, possibly even probation?
All in all, Dr. Conrad Murray may well end up getting the last laugh as far as his sentencing is concerned. The only item of concern for him is the amount of restitution the Jackson family is seeking.
Rumors are that it may mount to 100 million dollars. The final decision on that will be conducted on Jan. 23 2012.
However, considering book deals, interviews, documentaries, appearances and even a possible movie deal, Murray could be able to pay that sum faster than anyone anticipates.
That is of course if all these deals materialize.
If not, well, good luck to the Jackson family getting any restitution at all. Dr. Murray’s lawyers have already stated he has no money and you can’t draw blood from a stone.
What does all this means?
In legal terms it means that what’s being said isn’t always what’s being done.
On one hand the judge wanted to use Murray as an example by giving him the maximum sentence of four years. On the other hand that same judge made a mockery of the trial ordering Murray to pay $800 restitution on Tuesday.
$800? Really? Michael Jackson may have been a ‘weirdo’, a ‘strange’ and ‘eccentric’ individual. He may even have been, as the rumors have it, a drug addict.
Regardless, the fact remains that Jackson is dead. The fact is a person died during Dr. Murray’s watch. Whether that individual was famous or not should not be an issue and have no merit. A human life is a human life, no matter who it is.
In that light, the question remains: Is justice really justice?
We all know of cases where the convicted has to serve a much harsher sentence and pay a much larger restitution fee for crimes far less severe than the one Dr. Murray committed.
