SYDNEY – The Australian airline Qantas continues to stay on lock-out leaving more than 70,000 passengers stranded world wide.
For the past several weeks Qantas planes have been sitting on the tarmac because of an unresolved disputes between the company and its employees over salaries and company reform plans.
“As long as the labor unions do not pull their exaggerated salary increases from the table, no planes will fly,” according to the company.
Thousands of employees have been told to stay home without pay until the dispute is resolved.
On Friday, the Australian government established a jury commission that has the power to end the strike. The commission has also been given authority to make new agreements and to start new negotiations with the labor unions.
A government appointed lawyer told the commission that Qantas lock-out is costing the company several ‘tens of millions of dollars per hour’.
Heads of labor unions call Qantas’ lock-out ‘blackmail’ to not to have to increase employees’ salaries.
Virgin-Atlantic, Qantas competitor, has announced it is increasing its flights with over 40,000 seats to help Qantas travelers stranded around the world to get to their destinations.
