There are millions of video games available on the market; yet a homosexual oriented digital game is still a rarity.
Game development studio Gambit, in cooperation with a Massachusetts technical school and the government of Singapore, is developing a game that is homosexually friendly.
According to Gambit, A Closed World is a game that requires players “to carefully consider what is ‘normal’ and what it takes to survive in this world while still being true to yourself”.
The game entails a story about a homosexual man who is tired of the constant barrages of insults he gets from people in his village. The man decides to move to the nearby forest to escape the slander, full well knowing that the forest is haunted by demons and monsters.
A Closed World was created as a challenge to make a game that would both tell a nice story yet at the same time offer homosexually specific content, according to the developers.
The makers of the A Closed World post this statement on their site:
“A Closed World was created to be a digital game with LGBTQ-friendly content, something that’s very uncommon in games right now. Game designers and marketing professionals alike have cited a number of reasons for this, ranging from a perception of institutional homophobia in game culture to a genuine desire on the part of game designers to “get it right” and create games with compelling queer content, rather than feeling that the element is merely “tacked on” in the end. The goal of this research was to present the design team with the challenge of creating a game that had this compelling queer content, and to observe the ideas and hardships they considered and encountered along the way, so that we could learn more about how to approach those challenges in other design contexts.”
