NEW HAVEN – In New Haven, Connecticut, a 20 month old girl was bitten to death by 3 pit bulls, belonging to the toddler’s aunt.
All 3 dogs were euthanized afterwards, despite the aunt making a statement to New Haven police that, prior to the incident, her pit bulls had no history of aggression, which the neighbors contradict.
This is yet one more sad case where innocent human lives are needless lost and animals must pay with their own lives because owners fail to raise them properly.
Dog aggression, although a character trade in some breeds, is more often the result of ‘bad’ owner guidance and rarely the result of a dog’s temperament.
Pit bulls especially have been given a bad wrap as “a killer breed” that should be made extinct.
What people fail to realize is that pit bulls in particular are a “man made” breed that was produced for the sole purpose to fight in ‘pits’, hence the name pit bull.
The original pit bull terrier that was first introduced in the United States in the late 1800s was bred in England, Scotland and Ireland and was used as catch dogs for semi-wild cattle and hogs.
However, these dogs were also used for ‘human’ companion and even as ‘therapy’ animals.
Today’s Pit bulls however, are the creation of man wanting to show off his own aggressive nature by having these animals participate in illegal, violent dog fights.
Certainly, pit bulls are a more aggressive dog breed but so are German Shepherds and Rottweilers; even the popular Chow Chow is known for having a ‘quick’ bite. And astonishingly, the tiny Chihauhau, with its cute perky snout, can be rather aggressive around noisy kids.
Regardless of dog breed, owner responsibility plays a major part in a dog’s behavior.
Paring up the wrong breed with the wrong owner is yet another reason why unfortunate dog accidents happen. An alpha dog shouldn’t be with a subdued owner and visa versa.
A Dalmation shouldn’t be expected to sit quietly in front of the fireplace all day and a Yellow Labrador shouldn’t be expected to go hunting and running through the field.
As with any breed, there are those that are more aggressive than others. It’s a trade that’s even visible in humans (surprised?).
I know of people owning pit bulls that are the sweetest dogs you have ever met. My neighbor has one. And as large and as intimidating as that dog is, he wouldn’t hurt a fly. My neighbor raised him with nothing but love and devotion and it shows.
That’s why this incident is yet another one of those sad cases where an innocent child dies and 3 dogs are killed off because the owner more than likely wasn’t being responsible and the dogs were probably not being treated the way pets should be.
If any indication leads us to think so, it is that in this story neighbors have come forth telling police the dogs did have a history of aggression.

WOW Some serious ‘ifing’ going on here. Maybe it is the owners fault, maybe the child provoked the dogs. That does not make it any less sad. I love dogs and know that we must protect them, and all animals for that matter! However when an animal kills a human it should be put down. By the way, when did reportong the facts of a news story become a news swtory with the writers opinions put nin. Is there any reporters left who report the facts and let the individuals who read the article decide what the meaning is? I cannot find them anywhere.
