UPDATE Aug 11, 2010 ~ Bad news, jailbreakers, and we didn’t have to wait 3 years to get it either; as promised, Apple’s just released iOS 4.0.2 for the iPhone and 3.2.2 for the iPad, both of which close the PDF exploit used by JailbreakMe to make your Apple device universal and thus stops you from using your iPhone or iPad with another signal carrier.
That appears to be the only change — for now. For anyone concerned about iOS security, this is definitely good news. Still, we’re guessing the Dev Team at JailBreakMe.com is hard at work to find a new way to crack the latest Apple iOS open once again.
And so the saga continues. We’ll let you know if we find anything else — and hopefully you do the same?

ORIGINAL POST Aug 1 2010 – CUPERTINO, CA – Apple has been holding consumers who purchased an iPhone, their signature gadget, on a very short leash. indeed, buying an iPhone requires you to use the only Apple approved internet and cellphone service company, AT & T and all phone applications must be obtained directly from Apple’s iTunes.com site.
With over 300,000 iPhones sold in just 3 days after Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO and front chief announced the availability of its latest gadget the iPhone 4, it’s clear to anyone that Apple is choking its competition and wants to monopolize the smart-cellphone industry.
This is about to change. A new ruling, offered by the Library of Congress allows for a DMCA exemption, which permits electronic gadget owners to “tinker” with the applications that run the devices. The LOC granted 6 exemptions total which state:
- Professors can make compilations of film and video material for research or teaching.
- Archivists can preserve copies of old programs and computer games.
- Anyone can work around broken hardware “dongles” that prevent access to software programs.
- Blind people can use software to have e-books read aloud.
- Wireless phone customers can switch their phones to a different wireless provider.
- Anyone can study, test, or remove malware distributed on CDs.
That means that anyone, yes anyone, can now offer software applications to iphone users, more over, these exemptions allow companies to “jailbreak” iphones which will give the devices the ability to run apps and use themes and tweaks not approved by Apple.
And with so many iphones sold world wide, this makes for a brand-new, lucrative business opportunity that certainly will be taken full-advantage of by savvy marketers and brainy techs. One such company that has already jump on this exemption success bandwagon is JailBreakMe.com which jailbreaks iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad free of charge, although they do welcome donations.
But there is limited time for this opportunity. The DMCA exemptions are only good for 3 years. Certainly Apple will do all in its power to regain exclusive rights of iphone sales, internet service and applications.
For now at least, it looks like Apple must step down from its single dominance throne and allow its consumers to have the freedom to run their iDevices they way they want to.
