Mistreated Bear Commits Suicide

BEIJING – Horrendous bear stories taking place away from the public eye lead to the animals committing suicide.

At bile farms in China and Vietnam, some 12,000 bears are kept in cages not large enough for them to stand in. A permanent hole gaping from their stomachs is used by the bear keepers to tap bile from the animals’ gal bladder daily.

The bile is sold for its supposed medical value to reduce fever and heal liver and eye conditions.

The bears are in constant pain and many hit their stomach hard with their paws in an attempt to end their miserable existence.

To prevent the bears from killing themselves they are placed in metal harnesses that allow the keepers to tap the animals’ gal bladder for some 20 years. The bears are sitting on a metal bar floor that prevents them from hibernating.

According to an undercover investigation by animal protection organization WSPA, they witnessed a mother bear breaking free from her cage when she heard her cup screaming from pain when its stomach was pierced with a rod to create the permanent hole in the cup’s stomach.

In full rage, the mother bear stormed to the cage where her cup was held. The keepers ran away. Then the bear proceeded to grab the cup by its neck and wrangle it through the cage’s metal bar to freedom.

Once the cup was freed, the mother strangled her cup with a death bite. Then she turned and full speed and full force slammed her head in a brick wall and killed herself.

That’s what the bears kept at China’s bile farms do … their daily living conditions are so unbearable, that the animal actually considers and commits suicide as a way out of their daily horrendous and horrific existence.

Chinese medicine has long based its remedies on potions made from animals. Shark cartilage, snake blood and bear bile are just a few of them.

Fortunately the practitioners of this ancient medicine are willing to forgo animal products and use alternative synthetic or plant based ingredients to create their healing potions.

But until a complete switch has been made many animals, including “bile bears” will continue to endure cruel treatments and conditions, all for the sake of money.
