Lynnewood Hall, the once palatial mansion of the extreme rich Widener family, now stands empty and desolate at the end of a two lane road awaiting its faith.
This 100 year old impressive building is located in Elkins Park, PA and was once nicknamed “The Little Versailles” for its lavish fountains, statues and structure; most of which have already been dismantled or destroyed.
And its once meticulously groomed French gardens are now overgrown with weeds and shrub. All that remains of this impressive place is its regal facade which has lost its luster and the wrought iron gates are all but fully rusted.
Lynnewood Hall is a relic of a bygone era facing an uncertain future. Will it be demolished to the ground with no trace of its existence left? It seems to be the doom that looms over so many of those pre-Depression opulent homes like the neighboring mansion of Whitemarsh Hall, the demolished mansion of banking magnate Edward Stotesbury?
Or is there a brighter future ahead for such awe inspiring structure and will it be returned to former glory, like industrialist Alfred I. duPont’s former Nemours Mansion in Delaware?
Stephen J. Barron, who runs a website and Facebook group aiming to drum up interest in the mansion’s plight has this to say:
“It’s a tragedy that people drive past Lynnewood Hall and don’t know what it is, or don’t even notice it’s there. It breaks my heart and it bothers me. The house is a work of art.”
What final faith awaits this grandeur palace is anyone guess at this time. At today’s cost of living it would take $212 million to build this place. Surely not a large sum of money for some of today’s affluent. Bill gates … Warren Buffet … Donald Trump … anyone?
